Around the year 1930, Doña Cecilia bought the house where Hotel Hostal San Nicolás presently operates, a house bearing the characteristics of a middle class family of the time. For several years, the house was rented out to Don Jorge Mancilla, a renowned potterer back then, dedicated to craft angels and religious images for communal prayers, religious processions and other festivities in the city. When he passed away, Doña Cecilia’s grandchildren decided to keep the property as part of their family estate. Some areas of the original house have been restored, however retaining most of its original architecture and Colonial style. Years later, the idea of creating a hotel was born. In February 2002, Hotel Hostal San Nicolás first opened its doors.
Went to Antigua for the first time with a friend and stayed here because of some of the tripadvisor reviews, they were spot on. You are always greeted with a smile from the staff no matter how late and/or early you see them. We had to leave the hotel very early in the am many, many times during our trip for activities like seeing Tikal (left at 4am) and the staff was always there to make sure we made our shuttles. There are only 4 rooms in the hotel and the courtyard is a place where you can zone out for hours on end. They also provide you with complementary breakfast and coffee although we wanted to get out and try as much different foods in Antigua as possible and thus didn't take advantage of the breakfast as much as others who may stay here. The rooms are big enough and clean. We were hardly in the room other than to catch a quick rest or sleep so it was perfect. They have very strong wifi in the rooms along with tvs. It is located a few (5/6) blocks from the Central Park of Antigua which was perfect. I could see how it could be a lot noisier if you wanted to stay closer to the Central Park. It was far enough away from the action to be quiet but not too far away that it seemed like it was inconvenient. I would definitely suggest people stay here if you are traveling to Antigua! Safe travels.
